New Jersey Defensive Driving Course

Far too many people don’t even know that there are defensive driving courses out there, but this is potentially one of the most important classes you’ll take in your life. That’s because defensive driving can do more than save you money (which we’ll talk about in a moment) but it can also save your life. All you need to do is figure out just where to take your New Jersey Defensive Driving Course, and we can help with that.

What is Defensive Driving?

If you’ve never really heard of it before, defensive driving is all about being fully aware of your surroundings and making sure that you are being proactive about how you drive instead of reactive to what other people are doing. It means making sure that you stay as focused as possible on driving at all times, rather than allowing yourself to get distracted by anything else.

Also, it means relying on your own driving and your own attention and focus rather than expecting anyone else to do what they’re supposed to do. Instead of expecting that the vehicle coming up to the red light is going to stop, defensive driving means that you would be prepared to act in case they don’t. And that can save your life and the lives of others.

Why Take a Defensive Driving Course?

There are several different reasons to take a defensive driving course. Let’s take a quick look at each and then dive into them a little more: Save money on your car insurance, Remove points from your driver's license, and Improve your overall safety while driving

Save Money on Your Car Insurance

The first thing that you can do by taking a New Jersey defensive driving course is save some money on your insurance. That’s because car insurance companies know that someone who is more aware of their surroundings and better prepared on how to act if something goes wrong is less likely to get into an accident.

If you take this type of class, many insurance companies will give you a discount on your insurance (often up to 10% for 3 years) because you’re less of a risk to them. It’s definitely a bonus for you and the discount could stay on your insurance for years. All you have to do is take a single, short class and you could end up saving thousands over the life of your policy.

Remove Points from Your Drivers’ License

If you’ve gotten into an accident or if you have gotten certain types of tickets you may be able to remove the points on your license by taking a defensive driving course. Much like your insurance company, the DMV understands that if you know defensive driving you’re less likely to make the same mistake again.

You would be responsible for paying for the course, but when you turn in the results of the course the DMV may remove some of the points from your license. This can make it easier for you to get approved for car insurance and get lower rates. Plus, it’s going to keep you from losing your license (but keep in mind you can only remove 2 points every 5 years).

Improve Your Overall Safety While Driving

Finally, you can improve your safety while driving by getting training in defensive driving. We all go to drivers education classes in order to get our license. And while there, you learn about all of the things that you and the other drivers on the road are responsible for doing. You also learn how to drive as if the other drivers on the road will always do what they’re supposed to do. But that doesn’t always happen.

Instead, it’s important that you learn what to do when other people aren’t acting the way they should. That’s because, the truth is, everyone makes mistakes. And you don’t want to end up seriously injured because of someone else’s mistake. By learning to drive defensively you can reduce the chances of an accident, which will help you (and everyone else on the road) stay safer.
