Gas may be cheaper than it has been in a long time but there is till more you can do to save money on gas. It comes right down to the small but important improvements and changes you can make to improve your car’s fuel efficiency. Check out a few tips we have collected for you.

Check your tire pressure

fuel-efficientTake out your car manual and find out what the recommended tire pressure is. And if you need to, buy a tire gauge – they are affordable and go for anywhere between $3 to $20 dollars. Once a week, make sure your tires are inflated to the recommended pressure because that will increase fuel economy by as much as 3%. Not only will this help save you money on gas it will also prevent tire wear and catastrophic blowouts on the road that can cause accidents.

Fill up on the right gas

Many people mistakenly believe using premium gas will help an engine run better. That is not true. Check your owner’s manual to see what octane gas you should be using – regular, premium, etc. If your vehicle only needs regular gas to get moving, and you are filling up with premium, you are just throwing money away for no reason.

Empty out your trunk

The less weight on your car, the less gas it uses to move. Easily the best way to reduce the weight of your vehicle is to empty out the truck of unnecessary items. The only things you needto have in your trunk are your emergency car kit, extra blankets, snow shovels, and an extra tire. All other items should be removed before you hit the road again.

Slow down

Not only will you reduce the risk of getting into an accident or getting a speeding ticket, but you will also cut back on how much gas you are using. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, gas mileage decreases when you drive over 50 miles per hour. Think about that before going heavy on the gas pedal.

Use cruise control

A surprisingly ignored button on most cars, this incredibly useful feature will allow you to maintain a constant speed thereby reducing fuel consumption. Turn on the cruise control when you are on long road trips to save gas.

Avoid idling

Idling your car destroys gas mileage because it takes a lot of fuel to keep it running while at a standstill. If you are stuck in traffic that is not moving, turn off your vehicle. Using these tips will make your car more fuel efficient which will help you save money in the long run, which is something we all want to do.
